In Loving Hands

A picture is worth a thousand words.

With this tested and tried truism in mind, "In Loving Hands" – an innovative collaborative learning experience between Wuesthoff Hospice & Palliative Care and Brevard Community College photography students – was developed. The project paired students with hospice workers with the direction for the students to use their photographic skills to portray to the community what it means to be a hospice caregiver.

"For the students to capture the work of hospice, they needed to understand how the workers' lives and emotions are affected by their work and how they interact with their patients," explains instructor Marilyn Cook. She added, "These are some of the areas we asked the students to explore during the course of this project."

Did the project prove successful in helping the students achieve this understanding? "This project opened my eyes to the inside world of Hospice. While being aware of their ‘business' – caring for the seriously ill – I never fully understood the dedication and love they strive for. Meeting the workers and forming relationships with them will be an experience I won't soon forget," explained participant Jenee' Wagner. Fellow student Justin Shimer summed up his experience this way, "The Brevard Community College/ Hospice Project changed me. There has never been a moment in this program as a photographer and human being that I have not felt rewarded. Until my time with this project I have never seen such pure examples of Love, Hope, Understanding and Courage. I leave this project with a profound respect for Hospice and everything they do."

The "In Loving Hands" project was a growing and learning experience for the students and proved rewarding and gratifying for our staff as they shared their work with the students," states Lisa Kalaf, Wuesthoff Hospice Executive Director. "It has also provided a wonderful visual educational tool to share with the community the compassionate care hospice provides," she adds.

Wuesthoff Hospice & Palliative Care is committed to working with and caring for our community.
